UNCF's Walk for Education

Education is a cornerstone of every modern civilization, and it is the foundation which fosters innovative thinking and marks each progressive stride we take as a society towards a better future. Like the telescope that brings into focus distant universes and the microscope that elucidates the fine details of our own world that the unaided eye fails to detect, education is a lens that refines our insight and understanding of our own experiences and of the world around us. The disparity that exists in our modern educational system is, in my opinion, one of our country's greater failures currently, and it is something that programs such as UNCF's 2017 Walk for Education work to combat by raising awareness and money for student college education.

As a volunteers for the event, myself and other Tulane students arrived at 6:30am to set up tents and chairs for the event and helped facilitate program registration. After set-up was complete, a few of us walked around with photographers and large poster signs encouraging students to promote the event on social media with the label #Laceup4UNCF. We also had students pose with event posters for group pictures to be posted on the event webpage. During the event, we joined registered walkers and continued to promote the event by holding up posters and encouraging people to post on social media. Afterwards, we assisted vendors with tent breakdown and put away all event equipment.

Overall, I found volunteering at UNCFs Walk for Education to be a very fulfilling experience, and it is something I would definitely like to do again.
